Friedrich Merz, the leader of the center-right alliance of the Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU), is the new Chancellor of Germany after winning the election in February 2025.
The CDU/CSU is currently under a coalition government with the center-left Social Democratic Party (SDP), working on increasing military spending, improving the economy, and imposing stricter immigration policies. This is the 5th time that the CDU/CSU and SDP have worked together in a coalition government.
The SDP acquired the third highest number of votes in the February election, while the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) got the second highest.
Merz has publicly expressed his unwillingness to form a coalition with the far-right AfD due to its extreme nature, although some of the CDU/CSU and AfD's interests align such as in immigration policy. Recently, there has been a rise in far-right sentiment in Germany.
